Gender Transgression Survey Responses

The purpose of a survey about gender transgression was to determine if the concept of transgressing gender is valid.  Do men feel a sense of transgression when they do feminine-typical things?  Do women feel a sense of transgression when they do masculine-typical things?  I also explored how things like AGP and AAP, gender issues, homosexuality, and transgender identity affect a sense of gender transgression.  I also asked about pleasure for doing things that are either male or female typical.

Before I explain the survey further, I would like to note some difficulties I had while attempting to get respondents to this survey.  I posted this survey to the subreddit r/samplesize in order to get respondents.  My survey was downvoted by some presumably male to female transsexuals who decided that I was transphobic because I had posted to r/gendercritical in the past.  It's ironic that this was their reason for downvoting me, considering how I described my feelings for r/gendercritical in my previous blog.

I reposted this survey to r/samplesize under a different Reddit account, and I was able to get a good number of respondents, but eventually that post was taken down by the moderators of r/samplesize because some people (again, presumably male to female transsexuals) flagged it as transphobic.  I am weary about the results because there's a good chance some of the respondents answered falsely in order to produce bad results.  Despite this, and because this is not an academic survey, I decided to proceed with an analysis of the results.

Results

Gender Transgression and Delight in Overall Male and Female Respondents

I discovered that gender transgression (feeling like you have violated a boundary) is a valid concept when it comes to women feeling as though they violated a boundary by doing male-typical things, and also when it comes to men feeling as though they violated a boundary by doing female-typical things.  When it came to finding gendered activities delightful, men found female-typical activities less pleasurable than women, but the difference in delight for male-typical activities was not significant.

A feeling of violating a boundary by engaging in a non-gender typical way exists in both men and women.  Males feel less pleasure by doing female-typical things, but females find male-typical things about as pleasurable as men do.

Effect of A*P, Gender Issues, Homosexuality

AGP male responses are similar to non-AGP male responses, except that AGP males find more delight in female-typical activities.

AAP female responses are similar to non-AAP females responses, except that AAP females find more delight in male-typical activities, and find female-typical activities slightly more transgressive.

Men with gender issues find male-typical activities slightly more transgressive and female-typical activities more delightful.  They also find male-typical activities less delightful.

Women with gender issues find female-typical activities slightly more transgressive and male-typical activities more delightful.  They also find female-typical activities less delightful.

Homosexual males find female-typical things slightly more delightful.

Homosexual females find female-typical things slightly more transgressive and slightly less delightful.  They find male-typical things slightly more delightful.

Transgender Responses

Compared to men, trans women find female-typical activities less transgressive and more delightful.  They find male-typical activities more transgressive and less delightful.

Compared to women, trans women find female-typical activities both more transgressive and more delightful.  They find male-typical activities equally transgressive  but much less delightful.

Compared to women, trans men find female-typical activities more transgressive and less delightful.  They find male-typical activities less transgressive and more delightful.

Compared to men, trans men find female-typical activities more transgressive and less delightful.  They find male-typical activities both more transgressive and more pleasurable.

Further Research

I did not try to divide A*P trans responses from non-A*P trans responses.  I could possibly do this based on the questions I posed regarding sexual orientation and arousal by the idea of being the opposite sex.

What I Found Significant in this Survey

The first result that I found significant was that gender transgression appears to be real.  There does appear to be a boundary between female and male typical behaviours, with some kind of emotional response one has when it is crossed.

The second result that I found significant was that transgender people find engaging in behaviours that are typical of their birth gender to be less pleasurable.  I have heard accounts of trans people who are really off-put by engaging in behaviour related to their gender assigned at birth.  I speculate that this could be due to A*P types feeling disconnected to their female artifact (an internal persona that they love) by engaging in birth gender typical behaviour.  Evidence for this theory would be stronger if compared A*P to non-A*P transgender responses.

Sexual Fantasy Survey Responses - A Brief Analysis

Sorry that I haven't been keeping up with this blog.  It's hard to motivated to write things here when the reaction it get to my post about lesbians puts people off.  The motivation for studying lesbian attitudes towards men was based on hatred that I was observing on the subreddit r/gendercritical.  That subreddit has been banned from Reddit due to hate, so I was clearly not the only person who noticed the hateful content.  It's unfortunate when any group contains members who are hateful.  It complicates things when the hatred comes largely from a minority group (lesbians) and it targets men, who are often seen as acceptable targets for hate.  This topic matters to me because I was a victim to misandry as a child, and it has stuck with me.  There's evidence that internalized misandry can have an impact on how much gender dysphoria a man feels, but that's something I will be looking into in greater detail in the form of a study later.

With that off my chest, I can get into what this blog post is really about, and that's to describe some of my results from previous surveys.  I don't plan on going into much detail, but I think it's worth stating what some of my results were.

Sexual Fantasies Survey

For this survey I asked a number of questions regarding sexual fetishes, erotic target identity inversions, and mental illnesses (both formally diagnosed and suspected by the respondent).  I found these notable results:
  • People who masturbate more than once a week are more likely to have a fetish
  • People who masturbate more than once a week are more likely to be aroused by inhabiting a body that is not theirs
  • About half of people with unusual erotic targets, like furries or pedophiles, are aroused by the idea of transformation - i.e. transforming into their erotic target
Masturbation Frequency

There appears to be some kind of relationship between fetishes, masturbation frequency, unusual erotic targets, and erotic target identity inversions (ETII; wanting to be the sexual target you find desirable).  Higher masturbation frequency might point to a higher sex drive, which might in turn cause fetishes somehow, but I find this unlikely.  Many fetishes develop in childhood, prior to puberty, so sex drive might not play a role.  It could be that fetishes themselves trigger arousal more frequently, resulting in masturbating more often.  One such fetish is arousal by inhabiting a body that is not theirs (ETII).  It seems more likely to me that a fetish causes someone to be aroused more often, rather than having a greater sex drive.  Perhaps a fetish is a stronger arousal pathway than a non-fetishtic arousal pathway.

Erotic Target Identity Inversions and Unusual Erotic Targets

It's interesting that about half of people with unusual erotic targets, like furries or pedophiles, are aroused by the idea of transformation - i.e. transforming into their erotic target.  Autogynephiles are aroused by the idea of being women, and only 3-15% of the male population are autogynephiles.  Something is going on to make people with unusual erotic targets much more likely to be aroused by the idea of being their erotic target.  Below is a graph showing erotic target and percentage of those two desire to inhabit another body.  I also included those who masturbate several times a day and those who masturbate weekly.  Those who masturbate several times a day are much more likely to find it sexually exciting to inhabit another body.  Further study should be done on high-frequency masturbators.

Mental Illness and Fetishes

When it came to sexual fetishes and mental illnesses, people with the following mental illnesses were more likely to have a sexual fetish than the mean of the total of respondents: ADD + ADHD, OCD, borderline personality disorder, and schizophrenia.  Bipolar disorder did not increase the likelihood of a sexual fetish.  More research is needed regarding the relationship to fetishes and mental illnesses.

Future Studies

The following would be valuable to research:
  • Fetishes and frequency of masturbation:  Why do people with fetishes masturbate more frequently?
  • Unusual erotic targets and ETII:  Why are people with unusual erotic targets more likely to have ETIIs
  • Mental illnesses and fetishes:  What impact do mental illnesses have on fetishes, ETIIs, gender dysphoria, and the likelihood of identifying is the opposite gender or gender non-binary.

Speculating About the Cause and Treatment of Autogynephilia

Warning - this post is speculation.

To understand AGP we need to look at how sexuality develops.  Gay men are a sort of hybrid of male and female sexuality, which leads me to believe there are multiple aspects to human sexuality.  The first is the most base and primal aspect.  This is why there is very little homosexuality outside of the human species, unless the homosexuality is merely incidental.

The second aspect of human sexuality, which is uniquely human, relates to gender.  A masculinization or feminization of the brain creates a set of interests and personality traits that young children are interested in.  Children create a sense of their own gender and the other gender.  A typical child might notice that men have breads, a certain facial shape, a certain boy shape, and play a certain role in society.  They create a mental idea of what a man is, which differs person to person.  A child might develop the idea that a man has short hair, works with machines, and is muscular.  If the child identifies as belonging to this gender, he or she will strive to be like it and not find its traits arousing.  A child would also create a mental idea of what a woman is.  Female traits might include long hair, a feminine face and body, female clothing, and having a male partner.  There would likely be some variance as to what constitutes one gender or the other depending on the individual, his or her culture, and the people he or she interacts with at a long age.  If the child does not identify as this gender, he or she will find this gender arousing but not have a desire to take on the aspects of this gender, and might even be repulsed by the idea of taking on aspects of this gender.

The child, who is naturally very interested in gender, is doing two different things.  He or she is creating his or her idea of what it means to be a man or a woman, and is applying these ideas to the concept of the self and the other.  With those who have AGP, the sense of self and other is not yet developed by the time there is an interest in gender.  A proper sense of other is understanding that other people exist, are real, having feelings, and need to be cared for.  It's a feeling rather than a logical understand.  Because of the lack of sense of the other, gender identity develops normally, but the concept of the female does not get applied to an external entity.

The variation in the concept of the female is expressed in the interest of the man with AGP.  It's usually a combination of things, with some finding a certain type of clothing important, while others might find long hair or painted nails important.  Some find having a vagina important while others do not, possibly because they were unaware of the difference in genitalia during the time they were exploring gender and creating gender models.

Most AGP children eventually develop a proper concept of self and other later in development, but their sexuality is already hard-coded.  They are stuck with a lifelong AGP fetish.  The more primal sexuality is still present, and that drive pushes them towards seeking a mate and having intercourse.  Their sense of self and other are formed, and as long as they continue to have a healthy sense of self and other, they can function about as well as the average man who happens to have a fetish.

AGP can get out of control when the sense of self and other begins to break down or simply never develops.  Some men with AGP will have periods in their life with no desire to transition male to female, and other times when there is an intense desire.  Another sign of not being able to comprehend the other might be libertarian political beliefs or the desire for a bloody political revolution.

HOW TO TREAT AGP

AGP as a fetish cannot be cured.  It developed at a critical time in one's development and is likely permanent, although one might be able to not be exclusively AGP and might be able to reach orgasm from more vanilla fantasies on occasion.  In terms of sex, an AGP can rely on his more primal sexual desire and can likely function adequately in the bedroom.  Doggy-style sex might be the most conducive to focusing on the primal sexual aspect, and might provide the AGP a method of reaching orgasm without an AGP fatasy.

The aspect of AGP that can likely be treated is the desire to transition.  A person can chemically enhance his sense of empathy, which can help him become interested in others and no longer so focused on the self.  MDMA is likely the best drug for this purpose, but LSD would likely work as well.  I suspect that many men with AGP who feel a sense of gender dysphoria and a longing to transition can lose this longing by taking MDMA or LSD.

Acheiving Orgasm Without Relying on a Fetish

To acheive this, first you must be mindful of the emotions associated with your fetish.  Say you are aroused by the idea of being a woman - what emotions are involved throughout your fantasy?  Is there a sort of panic-excitement?  Is there a sense of shame that feels arousing?  What ever is it, be very mindful of it.  Try to be aware of the precise feelings, and the progression of feelings.

If you are not keenly aware of your feelings, start of by thinking about your fetish.  Get a perfect sense of your emotions.  Now, try to experience those same emotions in the context of being with a woman (if you are a non-homosexual man; if you are a homosexual man think about a man, and if you are a woman, I don't know, I don't understand female sexuality enough).  See if you can attribute panic-excitement or arousing-shame or whatever it is that you feel to the imagined encounter with the woman.

If you are having difficulty with this, feel free to slip into a fetishistic fantasy to fetch out your emotions, and then bring them back into the more vanilla sexual fantasy, and then run with it.  Perhaps the idea of a woman wanting to have sex with you while you try to resist it will turn you on.  Maybe the idea of a woman dancing to turn you on, or a woman shying slipping into the shower with you will turn you on.  See where your mind wanders, while always trying to experience the emotions you feel in the fetishistic fantasy in your more vanilla fantasy.

After attempting this, please tell me about your experience with this method on Discord, because feedback is essential.

Is Autogynephilia Actually a Transformation Fetish?

Autogynephilia is the arousal by one's self as female, and many male to female transsexuals experience this erotic desire.  I am proposing that the term 'autogynephilia' misses the mark when describing the particular sexual interest of certain individuals.  A more accurate term would be 'phylometamorphophilia' (a self gender transformation fetish), which is a subset of a broader range of self transformation fetishes.  Other types of transformation fetishes include: species or partial species transformation, age regression or progression, body modification, or transformation into an inanimate object.

I have discussed the idea of autogynephilia as a gender transformation fetish with other autogynephiles, and I have had mixed reactions.  There are those who agree wholeheartedly that this is the case.  Many of them have multiple transformation fetishes, and can see the relationship between a species transformation and a gender transformation.  Others are much more reluctant to agree.  They might find the idea of a story about a gradual gender transformation arousing, but typically in their fantasies it go straight to the idea of them inhabiting a female body - no transformation process at all.

When is a Transformation Not a Transformation?

How can one distinguish between a gender transformation fetish and a self as female fetish?  A transformation does not have to be gradual; it can happen all at once and still be erotic for the person with this form of sexual interest.  But if it happens all at once, and the fantasizer does not even consider a magical or scientific process that caused this to take place, it's difficult to determine if this is actually a transformation.  This particular type of fantasy might appear to be unrelated to a transformation fetish and is simply a self as female fetish.  However, if a male inhabits a female body, that is, by definition, a transformation.  It is a transformation from male to female, regardless of the process or lack thereof.  The problem is that it dismisses the idea of there not being a transformative aspect by saying that it is always a transformation.  This amounts to an unfalsifiable assertion that any type of self arousal as the opposite gender is a transformation fetish, which seems like a disingenuous and unhelpful way of reaching a proper conclusion.  It is also not the case for homosexuals who desire to be female, as they do not have gender transformation fetishes.

Can a Gender Transformation Explain Other Types of Arousal Associated with Autogynephila?

Autogynephiles are attracted to women, hence the gynephilia.  But autogynephiles are also interested in other sexual partners: gyneandromorphs (a.k.a. GAMs, people who appear female but with some male anatomy), feminine men, and masculine men).  I propose that we could lump GAMs and feminine men in one category in masculine men in another.  GAMs and feminine men could represent those who have partially transformed.  They are men who have taken on female characteristics and appear partially female.  Masculine men play a different role.  They signify to the gender transformation fetishist that they have been transformed into a female.  They validate that the transformation took place.  The attraction to a masculine man is not genuine for a transformation fetishist; they simply play a role in the fantasy.

Without the idea of autogynephilia as a transformation fetish, how do we explain the attraction to GAMs and feminine men?  Why would an arousal to one's self as female have anything to do with these erotic targets?  One would only expect the so called meta-arousal by masculine men if autogynephilia was unrelated to a gender transformation fetish, as well as the more genuine arousal by women.

Gender Transformation Co-Existing with Other Transformation Fetishes

Gender transformation often co-exists with species and age transformations.  A male heterosexual furry is commonly aroused by being transformed into a female anthropomorphic animal.  A heterosexual age transformation fetishist is often aroused by not only a change in age but also in gender.  I have even noticed that for some who are aroused by diapers, they are aroused by being transformed into a diaper.

Transformation fetishes give us an overarching narrative for a set of fetishes.  Rather than a set of seemingly random fetishes, we have a common relationship between several types of fetishes, including: autogynephilia, autoandrophilia, furryism, diaper fetishes, age related fetishes, transvestism, and body modification (like growing or shrinking).  The ability to tie together a bunch of seemingly random sexual proclivities is certainly a form of evidence for the autogynephilia as gender transformation theory.

How to Research the Gender Transformation Theory

Survey data is likely the best way to find a relationship between autogynephilia and gender transformation fetishes.  When I try to determine if someone with gender dysphoria is autogynephilic or a homosexual with the desire to be female, I have found that the easiest way to draw a conclusion is to ask "Do you have a transformation fetish?" with autogynephiles having this fetish and homosexuals not having this fetish.  A survey related to the various forms of transformation fetishes is probably the best way to get data regarding this subject.  I would also like to speak to an autogynephile who adamantly is not aroused by the idea of transformation, although it's difficult to isolate autogynephilia from gender transformation for the reasons mentioned earlier.  I plan to take a qualitative (seeking out autogynephiles who claim to lack any interest in gender transformation and asking them questions) and quantitative (survey data) approach to the question of autogynephila as a gender transformation fetish.
